As to quality, beyond about 10-15 feet (zoom at 180mm), image quality is
very similar at each aperture in the two lenses: excellent! The 180 AF
is barely discernably better at the edges and corners, but you would need
to check images shot at the same time of the same subject very carefully
to see the differences. The 80-200mm (non-D, at least) image quality
declines at close-focus at wide apertures, while the 180mm AF remains
excellent to minimum focus, and even beyond (on a tube). (See "SUBJECTIVE
Lens Evaluations, Mostly Nikkors" near the end of the Nikon FAQ)
As to experiences, a friend and I both owned both, but he sold the zoom
and I sold the 180mm. He usually uses a tripod (neither lens has a tripod
socket), and the zoom was too awkward for his nature photos (and the
close-up performance at the long end was not good enough for him). I
usually hand-hold the zoom for my commercial work, and the mass and
length help in using slow speeds succesfully. Whenever loading the camera
bag for a job, weight said take the 180 - but versatility and low-light
ability always made me pack the zoom, so I sold the 180.
Hope this helps.
