The Nikkor 100-300mm f5.6 is very good center-to-corner, all focal-lengths, all focused distances, all apertures - and has
the added advantages of being constant-aperture, and of having
unusually low linear distortion (none from 300mm down to about
135mm, then progressively more of the relatively benign barrel-
type down to 100mm). The front element rotates during focusing,
it is a one-ring zoom type (which I find preferable for tele
zooms), and there is no tripod collar. BTW, the lens is physically fairly long (though reasonably light), and the filter size is 62mm. Converters do not work well with this lens.
