The best that I have seen is the old Cosina 100-500mm f5.6-8.
It is quite sharp from 100-400mm, and pretty good out to
500mm. BUT: it is very slow, and the lens is even slower than
rated, making it difficult to use. Also, it tends to repeat
light sources in night images, making it useless for these
(fireworks, moon, etc.). I never use mine, but it is so
remarkably sharp, it is difficult to part with it...;-)
