I did this with the TC20E, but concluded that with the 2X converters, the
TC20E wasn't as good as the TC300/301 on non-I/S lenses they then both
fitted. 1.4X converters tend to be sharper than 2X converters,
so the differences between particular converter designs (and converter-lens
combinations) may be less with the 1.4X's...

It isn't truly vignetting, but the illumination isn't even - and it
does improve with a converter. BTW, a really excellent converter for
the older-style Nikkor 500mm f8 mirror is the TC14/14B - and the
TC14 is often sold cheap used... I leave mine on my 500 - the 700mm
result may be slow, but it is small, light, and surprisingly sharp.
