No. The recording format is the same with both types.
In addition to better low light ability, the best
3-chippers are able to record color a bit better than
the best one-chippers in the mid-tones, and far better
at the tonal extremes (colored christmas lights tend
to be white with one-chippers, colored with 3-chippers,
for instance...).
