It is so simple, it is hard to believe the question is
being asked - maybe that is why there was no answer...? ;-)
It is as easy as doing what you describe - just place the
discarded ends together on one track (likely V2 or above)
and turn off this and its related audio track (they then
"disappear" from the timeline playback of the project;
when finished with the main project, turn off the other
tracks and turn on the "off" tracks, and you now can
play-back/export the discarded clips, with no further
editing operations needed... BTW, I often "silence" the
top video and bottom couple of audio track(s) so that they
can be used to store discarded clips that may still be
useful in the final edit.
