An AIS mount will not allow you to see aperture settings in the VF, since there are no electronics to transmit the data. The current
Tamron mounts for Nikon are AIS, though. As far as "upgrading" is
concerned, newer is not necessarily better, maybe just different
(and the 6006 has no DOF lever) - depending on what newer features
are actually helpful to you vs. what you lose going from the old to
the new (I would keep the old FE around for a while, if possible,
until you get over the "whiz-bang" features of the new, and see if
you really like them).
