technical support at sony says that all consumer

The answer (other than using a Lanc controller with
"wake-up" capability) is described at:

and is basically a Lanc shorting switch for plug
tip and sleeve (not the ring in the middle of the
stereo mini-mini plug), easily made... BTW, it would
be easy to take the radio-control "guts" out of a
cheap radio-controlled car and use these to momentarily
short the Lanc cord from a distance without a wire
(I have used this idea to make a remote radio flash trigger
and camera motor-drive release...).
