Using AE-A permits specifying aperture; pressing the
exposure lock button gives current aperture info (at
least on the VX2000...); the chips are so small that
DOF effects are hard to achieve except near longest
zoom and with closer distances anyway...

Not unless the shutter speed and gain are known and
locked down...
