for a very useful post. We used to build all our
computers,
but decided ready-made fast computers were
too
cheap to pass up. Even with what appeared to be good
parts,
buying off-the-shelf resulted in a long string of problems
(and
the *re*discovery that MUCH faster may be only a little
faster
in practice, and not worth the trouble...;-). Among
many
problems: the MB FireWire would not export video to
the
camera, and trying to use FireWire for TV view while using
the
computer monitor preview window resulted in a "fast"
1fps
frame rate (kinda useless...). We went to a mix of older
software/hardware
and newer to get good performance,
but
there are still shortcomings...
