Experiment, experiment, experiment - using a good 100-speed
slide film and calibrated light box as your reference...
Good metering depends on good calibration of the camera's
controls and of the meter (at different light levels), using
a good metering technique (many possibilities...), and
having a good understanding of what it is you are doing when
you meter (including knowing about the color-errors of
meters), and of the limitations/quirks of the particular
gear and materials used... (and, I find "greenery"
generally
about one stop below "middle grey", and my hand
about one
stop above middle grey - and both can be useful in
metering).
