The
current best among "Handycam-style" Mini-DV/DVCam
camcorders
are: Sony VX2000/PD150, JVC GY-DV300,
Panasonic
DVX100, and Canon GL2 - and the Sony
TRV950/PDX10,
if low-light range is not important...
These
vary in minor particulars in picture characteristics, sound
quality,
control selection and layout, etc., and size (except that
the
TRV950/PDX10 is considerably smaller than the others).
Larger
"shoulder-mount" models also exist, with good Sony,
JVC,
and Panasonic models available. Some 1-CCD models
have an
excellent picture in low-contrast lighting, and are very
small -
but they have limited low-light range. Among these I
would
look at the 1-megapixel (or greater) Sony models...
