640x480 is the "native" resolution-proportion for
NTSC video - and even the megapixel camcorders
that provide for higher stills resolution provide
their best-quality images in terms of noise at
640x480... These are video cameras, not still
cameras, and almost any cheap digital still camera
will surpass the image quality and size offered
by video cameras. Video cameras are useful for
shooting stills for web use only (see for examples:
www.David-Ruether-Photography.com/fs.htm - all these images
began as 640x480 images shot with a good 3-CCD video
camera, and were adjusted in a photo editor...).
