In Premiere, you can raise the audio levels 12db
by using the gain control in addition to fully
raising the "rubber-band" level controls. If you
do
this, it is a good idea to check CAREFULLY for
points of clipping, and manually reduce the peaks
with the "rubber bands" if there are not too many.
It may also be useful to use the compressor in
Premiere to raise the average level without raising
the peaks. You can export/import tha audio, and place
it on additional tracks for additive volume (and/or
use the additional 12db gain then available -but if
the audio is THIS low, the original recordings had
some real problems...) - or you can take the track to
a good audio editor (Cool Edit is good, and cheap -
www.syntrillium.com) for manipulation. But with all,
the volume must be suitable before FireWire export
to tape (and there must be minimal clipping - more
than a few cycles of clipping and you can get audio
bad sound or even audio dropouts). If you are then
copying to an analogue format, you can then raise
the volume some with minimal bad effects, if
needed...
