28-80mm f2.8 Tokina:

- limited zoom range

- built beautifully

- pretty useless wider than about f5.6 (soft), though

  sharp from about f5.6

- flares badly

- big and heavy (and uses big filters and shade)

- acceptable distortion

24-85mm Nikkor:

- more useful zoom range

- flimsy-though-adequate feel and construction

- OK wide open, sharp by f5.6

- flare not a significant problem

- compact and light (and uses medium-sized filters)

- fairly noticeable distortion

24-120mm Nikkor:

- wide zoom range

- good feel and construction

- OK wide open, very good by f5.6, sharp by f8

- flare not a significant problem

- acceptable size and weight (and uses large

  filters and shade)

- acceptable distortion

As with all lenses (especially zooms), check the sample

purchased for good alignment (equal sharpness in all four

corners at widest stop, shot without refocusing - check

at several FLs with the same distant subject matter), and

purchase only from a seller that provides easy exchanges

for defects...
