It is a relative thing - it does surprisingly well in my TV
room with the main lights off, yet it cannot quite produce
a normally-bright picture in a chapel I often shoot in...

Depends on the lens and image sharpness - the TRV27 should
produce an excellent B&W image (even my old TRV9
does...;-).
Also, in infrared mode, the camera sensitivity is higher,
noticeably improving its low-light range (and I always
switch to B&W for this, to remove the "toothpaste
green"
color...).
