Geez,
you're not going to put up a "medication reference chart" that lists
all the
different medications, and their quality ratings, are you?
Kidding,
of course. Get well.

Hi--
Thanks
for the comments.
The
last nine months have been a wild "ride", and very confusing to
me, and
to neurologists, though I have tried to write an accurate
"history",
including descriptions of the various apparently-neurological
episodes
I've experienced (some of which have made it difficult
for me
to "keep it together" enough for maintaining an overall
perspective
on this). *My* best guess as to what has happened
to me
is the following: Minor brain structure irregularities (pre-natally
caused)
set me up for certain sensitivities. About nine months ago,
I had a
heart arrhythmia and several days of lowered oxygen
saturation
levels before electroversion to normal rhythm. BP had
been
high, with too-little difference in the BP numbers (enlarged
heart,
which I was not informed of, and the cause was not pursued),
so
pumping efficiency was not high (though not too bad even after
the
HA). I slept quite a bit in the weeks following, during which
the
neurological symptoms became more prominent (they began
mostly
just before the HA). About three months after the HA, it
was
discovered that I had severe sleep apnea (in 1.5 hrs I slept
in a
sleep study, I reached 62% 02 sat levels, remained around
80-85%
for almost 1/3rd the time, had about 60 arousals). I
suspect
that the OSA caused the heart problems (clear vessels
found
in a catheterization), which in turn contributed to the low
02
following the HA, adding to the effects of the oxygen starvation
at
night. While OSA usually does not result in noticeable brain
related
problems (it does result in heart-related problems, and can
result
in eventual heart-failure), it can. I found a study showing
that
brain damage can result from the OSA, and that speech,
cognitive,
and motor-control problems (these are what I have
experienced,
episodically, much of the time in the last nine
months
- though I'm also sometimes "normal") can result from
this.
While the episodic nature of what I've experienced
"bothers"
my main local neurologist, other long-term permanent
neurological
conditions like MS, PD, and epilepsy share this
characteristic
(and it may be that the brain irregularities set
me up
for a marginal, "teetering" condition that can account
for
this). Topamax was tried several months ago, and while it
appeared
to affect part of this positively in a short trial, even at
very
low dose I reacted badly to it. I was afraid to try another
similar
drug, but started Depakote about six weeks ago, and
tolerated
it well. About a month in, at only 750mg/day, after a
couple
of days at this level, I had about six days free of all this
crap
I'd been experiencing! I'm now at 1000mg, but still with
problems
again - but I'm still sorting out things related to dose
timing,
knowing what to avoid (like aspirin, which changes the
blood
levels of what works), and it is likely I will wind up on a
much
higher dose level of Depakote for maintenance.
Some
neurologists go along with part of my concept of what
has
happened, or see it in a different way, but none yet sees it
entirely
this way (and my local neurologists have diagnosed
this as
"in my head", stopping local pursuit of the cause and
treatment
- and I would have been "up the creek" if it had not
been
for having a neurologist friend in another state who could
follow
this, and supply the Depakote to try) - but this is the
only
view to date that appears to cover very well the
underlying
causes, the process, and the treatments (CPAP
and
Depakote) that work, all "real".
Needless
to say, I have little good to say about the local
neurologists,
except that one discovered the OSA when the
heart
specialists did not...
And, I
have a lot to say about the too-ready application of,
and
harmful effects of, the diagnosis of
"hysterical/dissociative/conversion-disorder"
- which is mostly
illogical
hooey, and it is, as my neurologist friend puts it, "the
last
refuge of the diagnostically bankrupt". The unfortunate
patient
diagnosed with this not only continues to suffer from
the
original condition, but is also denied further exploration for
its
causes, is not properly treated (and is sometimes verbally
mistreated,
and sent off to a psychiatrist for 7-10 years for a
"cure"),
may believe he actually is a bit nutty (very easy when
not
experiencing the odd episodic symptoms), and is labeled
in a
way that makes diagnoses of future ailments with "diffuse"
symptoms
also unlikely.
Aaaaaaaaaarrrrgggghhh!
;-)
Medicine
in the 21st century should be better than this!
(Easy
to get me ranting on problems in your field - sorry! ;-)
Thanks,
again.
