Also note that other factors (tone, color, intensity etc.)

I agree with this - and recently had a *cropped* 35mm image
(Velvia at 40, 80-200 f2.8 Nikkor around f5.6) blown up
to full billboard (UGH!) size, and it still looked OK
(at 75' or so...;-).
